They get their name from their size, like many animals this size, a teacup is about what they measure up to when first born. These little guys are going like wild cakes in the land over there, and the Brits don’t expect a downturn anytime soon. The teacup pigs, also referred to as micro pigs, and even micro mini pigs weigh about 9 ounces when they are first born and reach full grown maturity around the age of 2 years. They can reach about 65 pounds, significantly lighter than their counterparts the pot-bellied pig at over 100 lbs. Yet their worth their price in Gold.. eh or is that Sterling Pounds?

The breed was created with a mixture of several others including the potbellied pigs, a Kune Kune, a Tamworth and a Gloucester Old Spot Breed. The little guys, at no guilt on their part are sweeping the country and soon will be fully available Stateside, leaving many potbellied pig breeders to wonder how their going to continue to sell their larger counterparts when the micro pigs seem to be quite a bit smaller and easier to handle inside the home.

Since the micro pigs are highly intelligent, they can get themselves in a bit of a fickle if you may, getting into all kinds of things if they are left alone, so they may not be the ideal pet for someone who is not home to take care of them full time. Micro pigs have some advantages over the ordinary dog or cat in our lives. They tend to be rather non-irritating to the nose in the sense that they have very short and manageable hair instead of the fur and don’t shed or need to be brushed every day to maintain their coat. So i think the original craze that had started some years back surrounding the Pot Bellied Pig has not found a new footing in the micro mini or teacup pigs. This essentially has to do with size, and many people whom may have grabbed themselves a  Pot Bellied Pig back when they were hot soon found that these animals were entirely too large to keep inside their home.

This is where the micro pig comes in now. We see a much smaller big coming to market (no pun intended) and were seeing maximum sizes around 50 lbs. Well thats a much more manageable size and of course a whole lot cuter. The micro pig craze has certainly taken off in the UK lately, with several news shows signing up to get their cameras on these pigs and their correspondents interviewing the breeders.

We have been seeing a lot of a breeder Jane Croft on both the Today Show and virtually all over the web in viral videos from you tube to news media sites. She is the breeder from the UK who has been somewhat responsible for the start of this new found craze in micro and teacup pigs. Croft has discussed what has actually gone into the making of a micro pig by the combination of several distinct breeds.

The Tamworth pig is pale gingery to dark mahogany red in color and is characterized by a long neck and legs. They have deep sides and narrow backs and the breed is known for having excellent foot structure.

The second breed that Ms. Croft mentioned is the Kune Kunes. Kune Kunes arrived in Britain in 1992. These pigs look like a Walt Disney cartoon version of a pig. They are between twenty four and thirty inches high, and one hundred and twenty to two hundred and forty pounds in weight. They are completely covered in hair which can be anything between short and straight, and long and curly.

The third pig in the mix is the Gloucester Old Spots or GOS, descended from a region in Gloucestershire, England known as the Vale of Berkeley. Recognized as the oldest pedigree spotted pig in the world, the GOS was once popular with small family farms, where they were raised on dairy by-products (such as whey) and orchard “drop fruit,” giving these pigs the nicknames “cottage pig” and “orchard pig.”

The three breeds combined hardly explains the small or micro size of the the new micro or teacup breeds, but breeders have been working steadily to decrease the size of these pigs mixing them with the smaller Pot Belly and slowly creating the smaller pigs for household pets.

The micro pigs seem to be very docile and well adjusted in getting along with other animals like household cats and dogs. They need to be gradually entered into their new home and surroundings and should be supervised around children. The micro pigs like attention, and if they don’t get it may seek to be a bit mischievous, so its best that a new owner be available around the house a good portion of the day.

The information coming up these days is quite a bit more clear and accurate, and the described weight of 45-60 pounds for micro min and teacup pigs is about what we have found. We have yet to see a 25 pound pig full grown, even the one’s described as “super” micro minis.
